Pronunciation Rules
/ s /
When "c" is followed by e, i, y → cell, city, cylinder
/ k /
In other contexts "c" sounds like /k/ → cry, clever, can
/ ʃ /
In some special words "c" sounds like /ʃ/ → special, ancient, precious
/ d /
Standard "d" sound → do, done, dry
/ dʒ /
In some words "d" sounds like /dʒ/ → graduate, gradual, soldier
✾ When "d" appears at the end of a past tense verb:
/ d /
After voiced sounds → founded, banded, minded
/ id /
After /t/ or /d/ sounds → wanted, added, started
/ t /
After voiceless sounds → passed, asked, mixed
💡 The /id/ sound occurs when the base verb ends in a /t/ or /d/ sound. The /t/ sound occurs after voiceless consonants like /k/, /p/, /s/.
/ g /
Standard "g" sound → go, gold, glad
/ dʒ /
When "g" is followed by e, i, y (with exceptions) → page, logic, apology
âš ī¸ Some exceptions exist: get, give, girl, gear — these keep the hard /g/ sound despite being followed by e or i.

🕌
Islamic Architecture Connection: Relate the letter sounds to architectural terms students see daily. For example, a "dome" (/ d /) and a "minaret" — help students pronounce these correctly while discussing the beautiful shapes of mosques.
🔷
Geometric Shapes in Islamic Art: Use Islamic tile patterns as visual aids. Words like "circle" (/s/), "geometric" (/dʒ/), and "ceramic" (/s/) connect pronunciation lessons to Islamic decorative art traditions.
📐
Shapes Vocabulary Bridge: Domes are hemispheres, tiles are polygons, arches can be parabolic. Use these terms to teach both shape vocabulary and correct consonant pronunciation simultaneously.
🤝
Pair Activity Suggestion: Have students work in pairs — one reads a word aloud while the other identifies the sound category. Encourage peer correction with positive language. This builds both confidence (/k/) and social (/ʃ/) skills.
📱
Low-Tech Adaptation: If devices are limited, print the flashcard words on cards. Students can physically sort them into columns drawn on the whiteboard. The same classification logic applies without technology.
